How to Choose an AI Analytics Tool (Decide by the Question, Not the Dashboard)

Choose an AI analytics tool by naming the question you actually can’t answer today: what users do inside your product, which ad or channel drove a sale, why visitors bail before converting, what your customers keep telling you, or whether ChatGPT and Perplexity mention you at all. “Analytics” isn’t one job — it’s five, and this is the layer most operators build last, which is exactly backwards. Weak Outcomes create fake productivity: you ship, you feel busy, and you never find out what worked.

Answer 1: What do users actually do in my product? → PostHog

You’ve shipped features and have no idea which ones get used. PostHog’s free tier — 1M events, 5K session recordings, 1M feature-flag requests a month — covers most indie products in full, and it’s open-source if data sovereignty matters. PostHog AI turns “why did signups drop this week” into a query instead of a guessing session. This is the seat for anyone measuring activation and retention in a real product, not a marketing site.

Answer 2: Which channel actually sold it? → Triple Whale

You’re spending real ad money and the platforms’ own reporting all claim credit for the same sale. Triple Whale’s multi-touch attribution exists because iOS privacy changes broke platform-reported numbers years ago, and Moby (its AI analyst) answers revenue questions in plain English. There’s a free tier, and paid plans are GMV-banded and now quoted on a walkthrough (last published from $219/mo for Foundation and $749/mo for Automate), so the tool’s cost tracks the spend it’s supposed to be justifying. Skip this if you’re not running paid ecommerce acquisition; it has nothing to attribute.

Answer 3: Why are visitors stalling or leaving? → Microsoft Clarity

You’ve never watched a real user struggle with your site, and every “best analytics tool” list buries the free option under enterprise pitches. Microsoft Clarity is genuinely free — no tier, no cap, no card — with heatmaps, session recordings, and rage-click detection, plus a Copilot layer that summarizes sessions in plain language. The one honest tradeoff is your data going to Microsoft; for most operators, zero dollars answers that.

Answer 4: What do customers keep telling us? → Dovetail

Feedback is scattered across interviews, support tickets, and NPS comments, and nobody has time to read all of it. Dovetail ingests that pile and clusters it into themes you can defend with the original quote attached — evidence, not a vibe. Free covers one channel and one project with AI summarization built in; past that, Dovetail is Enterprise-only and custom-priced, which is the real gate — try it free before you assume it fits your budget.

Answer 5: Are AI answer engines even citing us? → Profound

Search traffic increasingly means “does ChatGPT mention you,” not “do you rank on Google,” and nothing else in this stack measures that. Profound tracks whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews cite you against named competitors, though since September 2026 it’s a free 7-day trial, then a custom Enterprise contract — the $99 and $399 self-serve plans are gone. On a solo budget, start with Clarity’s free AI Visibility report. It’s early and imperfect — this category didn’t exist two years ago — but it’s measuring the channel that’s about to matter, which beats measuring nothing.

The trap to avoid

Buying PostHog to answer an ecommerce attribution question, or paying for Triple Whale when you have no ad spend to attribute, or skipping Clarity because “free” sounds like it can’t be real. Each of these five tools answers one question well and the other four questions barely at all. Name the question before you open a pricing page.

Quick reference

Your question is… Tool Entry cost
What do users do in my product? PostHog Free (1M events/mo)
Which channel actually sold it? Triple Whale Free tier; paid quoted (last published from $219/mo)
Why do visitors stall or leave? Microsoft Clarity Free, no tier
What are customers telling us? Dovetail Free (1 channel, 1 project)
Are AI engines citing us? Profound Free 7-day trial, then Enterprise (custom)

The workflow should choose the tool. Name the question the Outcomes layer needs answered, and the analytics tool picks itself.
