The Stack / Writing & SEO
Surfer SEO
02 DecisionsYes for teams publishing SEO content weekly at volume — Surfer's Content Editor score gives writers and editors a shared, objective bar, and the workflow scales across an agency. A May 2026 rebrand (Essential/Scale renamed to Discovery/Standard/Pro/Peace of Mind) added a $49/mo entry tier and layered AI-search-visibility tracking on top of the classic content score — but that tracking starts on Standard at $99, so price the seat by which job you're buying. Lighter publishers still get most of the editing value from Frase for less.

Pricing
| Plan | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery | $49/mo | $59/mo monthly. 120 documents to create/optimize, 10 tracked pages, no AI prompt tracking |
| Standard | $99/mo | $119/mo monthly. 360 documents, 50 tracked pages, 25 tracked AI prompts (weekly refresh), basic team collaboration |
| Pro | $182/mo | $219/mo monthly. Recommended tier. 360 documents, 200 tracked pages, 50 tracked AI prompts (daily refresh), 5 brand workspaces, content-gap analysis. MCP access from this tier up |
| Peace of Mind | $299/mo | $359/mo monthly. Unlimited documents (fair-use), 500 tracked pages, 100 tracked AI prompts (daily refresh), unlimited brand workspaces, API access |
| Enterprise | custom | No published floor any more (we had "from $999"). White label, SSO, advisory program, custom limits |
| AI Search Analytics (standalone) | $82/mo | Entry tier for AI-visibility tracking on its own (~$95/mo monthly): 50 daily-refreshed prompts, 5 brand spaces, MCP across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini. Scales to $182/mo (still 50 prompts, adds the content-optimization suite) and $299/mo (100 prompts, unlimited documents, API). Only worth it standalone if you want AI-answer tracking without the content editor |

Models & versions
- Content Editor + Surfer AI SERP-driven scoring, AI drafting, audit and internal-linking tools
- AI-visibility tracking Added with the May 2026 rebrand — tracks how a brand shows up in AI-generated answers (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini) alongside classic Google rank. The honest read
What works
- + Content Score gives teams an objective editorial bar per keyword
- + SERP-derived term and structure guidance beats intuition at scale
- + Audit tooling finds decayed pages worth refreshing — often the fastest wins
- + Agency-shaped: white-label on Enterprise, API on Peace of Mind
What breaks
- − Even the $49 entry tier caps out fast for teams publishing beyond a baseline pace
- − Chasing the score produces stuffed, robotic drafts — writers must stay in charge
- − AI-article credits are additive, not the core value; don't buy for them
Use it for
- →Content teams and agencies with weekly publishing quotas
- →Niche-site operators scaling beyond gut-feel optimization
- →Refreshing decayed content against current SERPs
Skip it if
- ×You publish a few posts monthly — Frase covers the brief-and-score job for less even against Surfer's new $49 tier
- ×Your traffic strategy isn't search-led — the whole seat is moot
Questions operators ask
?Is the $49 Discovery plan enough?
Only if you want the content editor. Discovery gives you 120 documents and 10 tracked pages and no AI prompt tracking at all — that starts on Standard at $99. Decide which job you're hiring Surfer for before you pick the tier, because the $49 door doesn't open the room most people are buying for.
?Surfer or Frase?
Frase for research-and-brief at solo scale and price. Surfer for team workflows where a shared content score keeps ten writers aligned. Same philosophy — write to the SERP — different operating scale.
What changed
- Freshness sweep: checked the rendered surferseo.com/pricing. Annual prices hold (Discovery $49, Standard $99, Pro $182, Peace of Mind $299, AI Search Analytics $82), and the stated yearly savings still imply $59 / $119 / $219 / $359 monthly. Two small moves: Enterprise is now just "Custom" with no from-$999 floor, and MCP access is listed on AI Search Analytics, Pro and Peace of Mind.
- Freshness sweep: checked surferseo.com/pricing and found no change. Discovery is $49, Standard $99 (25 AI prompts, weekly refresh), Pro $182 (50 prompts, daily), Peace of Mind $299 (100 prompts, daily), and AI Search Analytics standalone $82 (50 daily prompts), all annual. Enterprise is custom.
- CORRECTION: the standalone AI Search Analytics price we published on 08-15 ($158/mo for 100 prompts) doesn't match the vendor page. The real standalone ladder is $82/mo annual for 50 daily-refreshed prompts (entry), $182/mo for the same 50 prompts plus the content suite, and $299/mo for 100 prompts with unlimited documents and API. Core Discovery/Standard/Pro/Peace of Mind/Enterprise prices re-verified unchanged ($49 / $99 / $182 / $299 / from $999).
- Prices re-verified on surferseo.com/pricing and all five annual figures hold ($49 / $99 / $182 / $299 / from $999). Two corrections to what we published around them. First, our Discovery row claimed "basic AI-visibility tracking" — it has none; prompt tracking starts on Standard. If AI-answer visibility is why you're buying Surfer, the real entry price is $99, not $49. Second, added the monthly rates ($59 / $119 / $219 / $359), the tracked-page limits per tier, and the standalone AI Search Analytics product at $158/mo annual for 100 prompts.
- REAL DRIFT: Surfer rebranded its tiers in May 2026 — Essential/Scale ($99/$219) retired, replaced by Discovery $49 / Standard $99 / Pro $182 / Peace of Mind $299 (all annual), Enterprise unchanged from $999. New entry tier and an AI-search-visibility tracking layer added across plans. Verdict and skip_if rewritten — the old "$99 prices out casual publishers" line no longer holds.
- Added to the stack (on-page-SEO seat). Verified: Essential $99 ($79 annual), Scale $219 ($175 annual), Enterprise from $999.
