The Stack / Image

Ideogram

03 Creation

Yes for any workflow where images carry text — Ideogram's typography rendering is still the category benchmark, which makes it the quiet thumbnail and ad-creative weapon. As a general image model it's competitive; as the fix for AI's mangled-text problem it's the pick.

The job in the stack

The text-in-image seat: posters, thumbnails, ads, and mockups where words inside the image must be right.

  • Ideogram 3.0 Still available: Turbo 12, Default 24, Quality 36 credits per 4 images (3 to 9 per image), no longer the cheap tier it was before the credit rescale

The honest read

What works

  • + Best-in-class text rendering — headlines, logos, labels come out legible
  • + Realistic mixed-tier usage still yields hundreds of images on Plus
  • + Strong for graphic-design-shaped output, not just photos

What breaks

  • − No free plan on the pricing page anymore — testing now means pay-as-you-go credits at 1¢ each
  • − Photorealism and art direction depth trail Midjourney at the top end
  • − Credit math still punishes the default: 4.5 High burns 10 credits an image against Low's 3, so Plus goes from ~800 images to ~240 without you changing anything

Use it for

  • →Thumbnails and social graphics with headline text baked in
  • →Ad creative variations where copy lives inside the image
  • →Poster, packaging, and logo concepting

Skip it if

  • ×Your images never contain text — Midjourney or Leonardo serve pure visuals better
  • ×You need vector output for real design work — that's Recraft's lane

Questions operators ask

?Why Ideogram over Midjourney for thumbnails?

One reason: the words. If your thumbnail carries a three-word hook, Ideogram renders it clean on the first pass while others mangle letters. For imagery without text, Midjourney's aesthetics still lead.

What changed

  1. Freshness sweep (ideogram.ai/pricing rendered in the browser): real drift. The Free plan column is gone, replaced by Pay as you go at 1¢ per credit. Basic ($8) is no longer sold. Prices hold for Plus $20 ($15 annual), Pro $60 ($42 annual) and Team $30/user ($20 annual), but priority credits more than doubled: Plus 1,000 → 2,400, Pro 3,500 → 7,500, Team 1,500 → 3,600 per user. Per-image credit costs were rescaled at the same time (3.0 Default went from 1 credit to 6 per image; 4.5 runs 0.8–22). Net effect: roughly 60% more 4.x images per dollar on Plus. Paid plans now include video models, and Enterprise is listed as a postpaid tier. Rewrote the pricing table, model notes and cons.
  2. Freshness sweep: added Ideogram 4.5 (Sept 30, 2026), a multi-turn edit model now live in the app and API. Plan prices are unchanged: Basic $8, Plus $20, Pro $60, Team $30/user monthly. One third-party source says in-app credit costs for 4.0 were halved between July and September. We could not confirm that at source, so the 4.0 credit costs stay as published.
  3. Freshness sweep: no changes. Plus $20/$15 annual, Pro $60/$42 annual, and Team $30/$20 annual independently re-confirmed exact match against a fresh third-party tracker. One outlier tracker reported a different ladder entirely (Plus $15, Pro $42, Basic $7) — its own annual math didn't reconcile internally, so treated as unreliable and not used; ideogram.ai/pricing itself 403s automated fetches, consistent with the pattern on other well-known domains.
  4. Freshness sweep: no changes. Basic $8, Plus $20/$15 annual, Pro $60/$42 annual, Team $30/$20 annual all hold; credit allowances unchanged. Confirmed against multiple current pricing trackers.
  5. Correction — our prices were the annual rates wearing a monthly label. Real monthly: Basic $8, Plus $20, Pro $60, Team $30/user. The annual rates we had published ($7/$15/$42/$20) are accurate only if you pay for a year up front. Added the credit allowances that were missing (400/1,000/3,500/1,500 per month) and split out Ideogram 3.0, which is still live and roughly four times cheaper per image than 4.0 Default.
  6. Added to the stack (text-in-image seat). Verified: Free 10 credits/wk, Basic $7, Plus $15, Pro $42, Team $20/user; annual saves 25–30%.
